Embarking on a yoga journey can be transformative, offering profound insights into the mind-body connection. However, not practicing yoga regularly can become a significant obstacle. We'll explore the kleshas, obstacles from the Yoga Sutras, and their relevance to prioritizing yoga practice and self-care in modern life. I know there’s always another pile of laundry to fold, an errand to run, or a call to make, but what happens if we don’t prioritize self-care?

Understanding the Kleshas:

The Yoga Sutras outline the kleshas as obstacles to spiritual growth:

  1. Avidya (Ignorance): Misunderstanding reality, leading to ego identification.
  2. Asmita (Ego): Sense of individuality, fostering comparison and guilt.
  3. Raga (Attachment): Clinging to pleasure, prioritizing external obligations.
  4. Dvesha (Aversion): Avoidance of discomfort, procrastination.
  5. Abhinivesha (Fear of Death): Fear-driven pursuit of external goals, neglecting self-care.

How Not Practicing Yoga Regularly Can Reinforce the Kleshas:

  • Ignorance: Without regular practice, we may remain unaware of the importance of self-care and keep telling ourselves, “It can wait.” Remember, ignorance is not bliss in the long term.
  • Ego: Believing that self-care is selfish, leading to neglect. Watch out for thoughts like “But first...” If you're a people pleaser, putting others before yourself can lead to resentment. Prioritize your practice, and you’ll have so much more to give.
  • Attachment: Prioritizing external rewards over inner balance. “Yoga will be there when I’m ready.” Notice how much time you spend shopping, indulging, eating, and scrolling on your phone for an instant high. Replace these addictions with healthy habits.
  • Aversion: Avoiding discomfort, leading to procrastination. “I have too much going on.” When I find myself saying this as an excuse not to practice yoga, it's a bad sign. What I'm really saying is that I'm avoiding things that are good for me because it's easier to stay in the chaos.
  • Fear of Death: Pursuing external goals out of fear, neglecting self-care. “If I don’t do 'blank,' 'blank' will not happen.” Running yourself ragged to get everything done isn't sustainable. Your life depends more on being healthy than on task completion.

Overcoming Obstacles with Regular Yoga Practice:

Hopefully, something in this message resonates with you. Busyness can get the best of us. Understanding the kleshas sheds light on the obstacles hindering self-care prioritization. In today's fast-paced world, if we don’t regulate the nervous system regularly through yoga, chronic stress becomes inevitable.

Cultivating awareness and compassion can unravel these afflictions, paving the way for holistic well-being through yoga practice and self-care. Remember, prioritizing health is essential for overall wellness, and we don’t want to wait until dis-ease takes over our lives! Start by setting small, achievable goals and integrating self-care practices into your daily routine. Procrastination only prolongs the journey to well-being, so take the first step today. Your future self will thank you for it.
